Healthy living for solicitors

Healthy Living for the Legal Profession: Our Top Tips for Busy Solicitors

While healthy living is something that should be embraced any season, the start of new year is a good opportunity to make changes for a healthier body and mind.

For busy solicitors struggling to keep on top of the mounting pressure of legal practice, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can often take a backseat. However, boosting your physical and mental health is not just beneficial on a personal level. It can be hugely positive for your professional life, enhancing your focus, resilience, and productivity.

Here are our top tips to help solicitors prioritise their wellbeing while navigating the challenges of a demanding legal career.

The Importance of Healthy Living for Solicitors

In the legal profession, long hours and intense workloads can often lead to burnout, and the latest statistics certainly confirm this. According to the Clio Legal Trends Report 2024, 83% of solicitors have reported experiencing stress in their job on a regular basis.

Healthy living is essential to counterbalance these challenges, supporting both mental and physical well-being. Solicitors who prioritise their health are rewarded with increased energy, improved concentration, and enhanced decision-making skills — all of which are crucial in delivering the best of the best legal services.

Here are our top tips for healthy living

  1. Healthy living through nutrition

Nutrition for healthy living

We have all heard the phrase, “You are what you eat”, and it’s one that makes perfect sense. If we think of our bodies as a car – the better-quality fuel we put into it, the more miles we get out of the tank. For busy solicitors, this is easier said than done. However, adopting healthy eating habits is the first step in working towards a more balanced lifestyle. Solicitors, often caught up in back-to-back meetings and court appearances, can benefit from planning their meals and making mindful choices.

  • Plan Ahead: Preparing meals in advance helps avoid unhealthy snacking and ensures balanced nutrition.

  • Opt for Whole Foods: Incorporate fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet.

  • Stay Hydrated: Keeping a water bottle at your desk serves as a reminder to stay hydrated throughout the day. Consider opting for a bottle with a measure so you can keep track of how much water you’ve consumed. According to the Irish Heart Foundation, the daily recommendation for men is 2 litres of water and for women, it’s 1.6 litres.
  • Avoid Caffeine Overload: While coffee may feel like a solicitor’s best friend, excessive caffeine can lead to energy crashes. Consider herbal teas or decaffeinated options as alternatives.

  1. Incorporate Exercise into Your Healthy living Routine

Physical activity is a powerful tool for managing stress and boosting mental clarity. There have been countless studies that highlight the positive health benefits of exercise. While time constraints are often cited as an excuse for avoiding exercise, just five minutes of physical activity a day can make a difference.

  • Start Small: Even a 20-minute walk during your lunch break can re-energise your body and mind.

  • Make Use of Technology: Fitness apps or online workout classes can provide guided sessions that fit into your schedule.

  • Desk Exercises: Simple stretches or chair yoga can relieve tension and improve posture.

  • Partner Up: As the saying goes, strength in numbers! Why not buddy up with your colleagues and make exercise a team effort? Exercising with colleagues can make physical activity more enjoyable as well as fostering an environment of support and motivation.
  • Engage in Social Activities: Does your law firm sponsor events such as team sports or charity runs (like the annual Calcutta Run which some of our SGN members have taken part in each year)? If so, this is a great way to combine fitness with networking.

  1. Manage Stress Effectively

Managing Stress for Healthy Living

As proved time and time again, the legal profession is inherently stressful not to mention overwhelming. But adopting proactive strategies can help solicitors maintain their composure and wellbeing at times of high stress.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Techniques such as meditation or deep breathing exercises can reduce anxiety and improve focus. The great thing about mindfulness is that it can be practised anywhere and anytime. No fancy meditation room or zen-like temple required! A simple five minutes of meditation at your desk is effective in grounding you and bringing about a feeling of calm and peace.
  • Set Boundaries: With such a heavy workload for solicitors, there’s always the temptation to continue working long into the night once home from the office. However, it’s essential to protect personal time by setting clear boundaries between work and home life.

  • Delegate When Possible: Sharing responsibilities with colleagues can lighten your load and enhance teamwork.

  • Seek Support: There’s no shame in asking for help and support if you’re struggling to manage stress. Consider speaking with a mentor or professional coach to develop coping strategies.

  1. Stay Organised and Set Realistic Goals

Organisation is a essential skill for solicitors with a jam-packed schedule of tasks and deadlines. But being organised is not just beneficial for your work life only – you can apply the same techniques to your personal life too. Here’s how:

  • Use a Planner: Schedule time for exercise, meal prep, and relaxation just as you would for client meetings.

  • Set Attainable Goals: Start with small, achievable objectives that build confidence and momentum. We shared some tips at setting SMART Goals here.
  • Prioritise Self-Care: Recognise that taking care of your health is not a luxury but a necessity for professional success.

  1. Get Quality Sleep

Quality sleep for healthy living

Sleep is often the first casualty of a busy schedule, Poor sleep can affect decision-making, memory, and overall health. And more to the point, there are direct links between poor sleep quality and mental health. According to a study conducted by the Sleep Foundation, 46% of people surveyed had a below average sleep quality. As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that adults up to the age of 64 should be getting between 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

  • Establish a Routine: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps regulate your internal clock.

  • Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet to promote restful sleep.

  • Limit Screen Time: A common problem in the current age of technology is being able to put away screens in the lead up to bedtime. Avoid screens an hour before bedtime to minimise blue light exposure, which can disrupt sleep patterns.

  1. Embrace Work-Life Balance

While so many of us struggle to achieve a successful work life balance, it is hugely essential for long-term happiness and health.

  • Take Breaks: Regular breaks throughout the day can prevent burnout and maintain focus.

  • Utilise Flexible Work Policies: One positive outcome from the Covid-19 pandemic is the rise of a more flexible working model. If your firm offers remote work or flexible hours, why not take up the offer? You can use these days more productively, thus reducing your stress levels.

  • Pursue Hobbies: Engage in activities outside of work to recharge your energy and creativity.

  • Unplug Regularly: When thinking about a work-life balance, one quote springs to mind: “Almost everything will work again once you unplug it for a few minutes, yourself included.” Be sure to carve out regular pockets of time where you completely disconnect from emails and work-related tasks.
