Bees and the Law: A Case Study

This talk will deal primarily with liability for and ownership of bees. There are some fascinating cases which illustrate these topics and which will be the basis of some audience participation. The opportunity will be taken to look at the heads of liability and the law relating to other animals.

About the speaker:

Paul Keane is the former Managing Partner of Reddy Charlton LLP, a prestigious law firm based in Dublin, with extensive experience in Corporate Law, Commercial Transactions, and Professional Discipline and Regulation. He holds several distinguished positions, including Honorary Consul General of Sweden and Chairman of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Ireland.

Navigating Probate: A Probate Officer’s Guide for Solicitors

This talk will focus on optimising your grant of probate applications for a smoother, faster process. Anne will cover the most common queries that arise and errors that can hold up an application, providing clear, actionable advice on how to prevent these issues. This session is designed to help you fine-tune your applications, reducing queries and delays, ensuring a more efficient path to completion.

About the speaker:

Anne T Heenan has spent all of her Civil Service career to date in the Courts Service, initially spending 11 years in the Probate Office before taking a secondment opportunity with the HSE for 4 years.  On her return to the Courts Service in 2010 she served in a number of different offices, including the Reform and Development Directorate and the Carlow Combined Court Office.  Anne spent 2 years as Court Registrar in the Court of Appeal before returning to the Probate Office in 2017 as Deputy Probate Officer.  She was permanently appointed to the position of Probate Officer in October of 2023.

Dr Niall Connors, Director of Regulation & Registrar of Solicitors at the Law Society of Ireland, will be joining us along with colleagues Seamus McGrath, Head of Financial Regulation and Shane Dwyer, Head of Regulatory Legal Services to discuss the Regulatory Ecosystem, Solicitors Accounts Regulations and Section 150, general legal matters. The main purpose of the talk is to deal with the recent changes to the Solicitors Accounts Regulations which came into operation on 1st July 2023. The talk will focus particularly on the types of issues that the Law Society investigating accountants encounter in the course of their inspections of solicitors accounts.

About the speakers:

Dr. Niall Connors is the Director of Regulation & Registrar of Solicitors at the Law Society of Ireland and leads a multi-disciplinary team responsible for ensuring the Law Society meets its statutory obligations in areas such as the maintenance of the Roll of Solicitors, solicitor’s practising certificates and the regulation of solicitors’ accounts, as well as ensuring anti-money laundering and mandatory professional indemnity insurance compliance, operating the Law Society Compensation Fund, intervening in distressed practice closures, regulatory litigation, and supporting the solicitor’s profession in relation to regulatory compliance.

Seamus McGrath is Head of the Society’s Financial Regulation Department and leads a team of investigating accountants. Seamus has overall responsibility for the investigation of solicitors’ practices, the management of the administration of the Society’s Compensation Fund and of reporting accountants’

Shane Dwyer is the Head of Regulatory Legal Service and leads a team of Solicitors & Legal Administrative experts with responsibility for providing legal advice to the Society on regulatory matters, Committee support to the Society’s standing committees, preparing & presenting cases for enquiry at the SDT & LPDT, providing advice on the drafting of new regulations, and acting for the Society in the defence of all regulatory litigation in the superior courts.

Two of which included him chairing the Law Society’s Money Laundering Reporting Committee, as well as being former chair of the Regulation of Practice Committee.

He has been elected as a council member of the Law Society of Ireland for over 14 years and is involved in many local committees and boards.
